HOUSE LIGHTING AND SOUND SYSTEM REFRESH

The auditorium at the Mineola Middle School was still running incandescent fixtures on legacy dimming — hot, power-hungry, and a standing relamping job for a maintenance staff that had better things to do. Not to mention the amount of bulbs that were out. The sound system underneath it couldn't hold a consistent image from the front row to the back of the balcony, which is a hard thing to explain to a parent who came to hear their kid.
Mineola wanted both addressed together, and wanted the room back before September. We handled the fixture conversion, the dimming, and the loudspeaker system as a single scope so nothing fell between two vendors.
VRX arrays were chosen for their cost-effectiveness while also providing the necessary splay angles to cover the entire room with just two arrays of 5 elements each, flown below a single VRX915-S per side. The steep curve and a shaded array provides consistent even coverage throughout the room.
EVERY SEAT, INCLUDING THE BALCONY
Integrators utilized existing Crown XTi series amplifiers for the mains, XLi series amplifiers for the subwoofers, and XLs amplifiers for the pre-existing under-balcony Control 25 fills. The pre-existing DSP and FOH console were also maintained.
FULL LED CONVERSION
Every fixture in the house was converted to LED and put on ETC LED10 PhaseAdept dimmer modules. The modules run reverse phase, which is what LED loads want. No flicker at the bottom of the fade, no buzz, and a smooth curve from zero rather than a bump up at 8%.
It also protects the investment. Driving LED lamps on legacy forward-phase dimming is how districts end up replacing new fixtures a year in.
JBL ARRAY SYSTEM
Five VRX928LA elements per side, flown and splayed for the room's geometry, coupled with a VRX915S subwoofer per side at the top. The result is even level and consistent tonality from the front of the orchestra to the last row of the balcony.
Speech stays intelligible at assembly volume, and the low end has enough headroom for a concert without turning the room to mud.
